In a shocking revelation, renowned rugby star Bryan Habana has shared the heart-wrenching story of discovering that his father had been siphoning money from him for eight long years while acting as his financial manager. This deeply personal account sheds light on trust and betrayal in familial relationships, particularly in the high-stakes world of professional sports.
Habana, who first gained fame with the Lions in 2003, is celebrated as one of the greatest rugby players in history. Over the course of his illustrious career, which spanned from 2004 to 2016, he represented the Springboks in over 100 Test matches, amassing an impressive total of 67 tries—the highest ever recorded by a Springbok player. Moreover, he played a pivotal role in securing victory for South Africa at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Today, Habana stands proudly in second place among the top international try scorers, just two tries shy of Japan's legendary Daisuke Ohata.
During his early career, Habana entrusted his father, Bernie, with managing his finances. At that time, Bernie facilitated one of the most lucrative contracts in South African rugby when Habana transitioned from the Bulls to the Stormers in 2009. As Habana’s star rose, he became a prominent figure in advertising campaigns, including Gillette's celebrated "Champions/Best a Man Can Get" campaign, where he shared the spotlight with icons like Roger Federer, Thierry Henry, and Tiger Woods.
However, it was during his transfer to Cape Town that Habana made the painful discovery about his father's dishonest behavior. In a recent episode of the Business of Sport podcast, Habana recounted the moment he learned of the betrayal and its profound impact on their relationship. He expressed, "Trust is a really difficult thing to understand. My faith was with my dad, who had been managing my finances since I was young. Eight years later, I found out that trust was misplaced."
Habana revealed that he lost a significant amount of money due to his father's mismanagement. The realization struck him when he attempted to purchase a home in Cape Town after joining the Stormers. "I approached my dad for funds to put down a deposit on a house, and he promised me the money would come," Habana explained. However, as time passed and the money never arrived, he faced mounting pressure from the estate agent, who warned that failure to provide the deposit risked losing the property. Desperate to secure what he described as their dream home, Habana was forced to seek bridging finance from a bank.
After numerous inquiries, he found himself with no clear answers from his father, leading to a frustrating three-month wait. In early 2010, after receiving troubling information about his finances, Habana took decisive action. He issued a communication to all his sponsors stating that any negotiations conducted by his father before the end of December were no longer valid, directing future discussions to be held directly with him or his legal representative.
The response from Canterbury International was swift and revealing; they informed Habana that a lucrative five-year contract had already been signed, complete with a substantial re-signing fee. Confused and concerned, Habana confronted his father about the missing funds, only to be met with denial. "He claimed he hadn’t received any money, but I had the contract right in front of me," Habana recalled. It became clear that his father had been living off the earnings meant for him, and the supposed Bryan Habana Trust—a financial safety net he believed existed—turned out to be a fabrication, with funds funneled into his father's personal account instead.
This breach of trust irreparably damaged their relationship. "When I brought the facts to him, he denied everything. I didn’t receive a cent of the money from Gillette," Habana lamented. Thankfully, he found solace and support in his wife, Janine, and their two children, focusing on ensuring their well-being amidst the turmoil.
When asked if he would like to mend his relationship with his father, Habana reflected, "I would gladly embrace that possibility if he were open to meeting me halfway. When I reached out to him for honesty, the truth wasn't forthcoming. Right now, my primary concern is my family—Janine and my sons are my top priority."
Habana also expressed mixed feelings about his relationship with his mother, noting that they see each other frequently yet carry the weight of past choices. He stated, "Do I still love my mom? Yes. Would I want a relationship with my dad? Possibly. But my family is what matters most to me at this stage. Having a relationship with him would be wonderful, but I offered him a chance to be honest. Mistakes can happen once, but repeating them is a choice."
