BYD Racco: Unveiling Japan's Smallest EV with 20 kWh Battery (2026)

Chinese auto giant BYD is stirring up excitement with a sneak peek at its upcoming compact electric vehicle, the 2026 BYD Racco, set to make waves in Japan's distinctive Kei car market. But here's the twist: this tiny EV boasts a powerful 20 kWh battery pack!

Last year, BYD unveiled its plans for a small hatchback, which was later revealed as the Racco at the Tokyo Motor Show. This model is specifically tailored for Japan's unique Kei car regulations, translating to 'Sea Otter' in Japanese.

BYD Japan recently shared more insights on their X platform, emphasizing the brand's commitment to smaller EVs for the Japanese market. The Racco's website promises a cleaner, smarter, and more eco-friendly future, starting with a 'small EV revolution'.

The Racco's design is tailored for easy access, featuring a Super Tall x Sliding Door package, a unique selling point for Kei cars. This feature will undoubtedly attract buyers seeking convenience.

A recent BYD presentation at a Tokyo car show unveiled the Racco's dual battery setup. The standard 20 kWh battery offers an impressive 200 km range, while an optional 30 kWh battery extends the range to 300 km. These ranges are more than sufficient for city driving, and the car is expected to support both AC and DC charging.

While the Racco shares features with other BYD models, it also showcases a distinctive style. Its boxy front and rear design adheres to Kei car regulations, measuring under 3.4 meters in length, 1.48 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height.

With most Kei cars in Japan powered by engines up to 660 cc, BYD's electric Racco could be a game-changer, especially as the brand aims to expand aggressively in this challenging market. Detailed specs and pricing are yet to be announced, marking a significant milestone in BYD's global strategy.

And this is where it gets interesting: BYD's founder, Riz Akhtar, an Australian mechanical engineer, is passionate about reducing transport emissions. His company, carloop, specializes in Australian EV data and insights. Could the BYD Racco be the next big step in his mission? Stay tuned to find out!
