Extreme cold and treacherous road conditions continue to keep students at home in Central Ohio, despite the snow having melted away. But here's where it gets controversial—many might assume the worst weather eases, leading to schools reopening. Yet, officials warn that an enduring Arctic blast has much more in store, prolonging school closures and cold warnings well into the end of January.
While the initial heavy snowfall has subsided, the cold temperatures and dangerous road conditions persist. The region is facing a significant Arctic outbreak that is expected to grip Ohio through at least January 31. Temperatures will remain well below normal, with multiple especially frigid nights forecasted to dip below zero Fahrenheit. Wind chills could reach as low as minus 25 degrees, prompting various cold weather advisories and extreme cold warnings across the state. Such conditions can pose serious health risks, including frostbite and hypothermia, especially for those who must be outdoors.
In response, many schools in central Ohio have announced closures for January 29, marking at least the fourth straight day of closures for many districts. While many students are still staying home, some specific services are being maintained.
Columbus City Schools will cancel all classes and extracurricular activities on January 29. However, recognizing the importance of nutrition, five designated school sites will open from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to distribute take-home meals exclusively for registered students. The selected locations—chosen for their accessibility and closeness to major roads—are:
- Columbus Global/International High School
- West High School
- South High School
- Walnut Ridge High School
- Linden McKinley High School
Meanwhile, several school districts and private institutions are implementing two-hour delays, giving students and staff extra time to navigate icy roads.
Among those with delayed start times are: Blessed Sacrament School, Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools, Dublin City Schools, Hilliard City Schools, Olentangy Local Schools, Westerville City Schools, and many more — totaling over fifty institutions. These delays are intended to ensure safety but also extend the inconvenience many families are experiencing.
The closures are extensive. Dozens of districts and private academies across the region have announced cancellations for January 29. These include popular charter schools, private religious schools, technical centers, and elementary through high schools, such as Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools, Columbus Bilingual West, Walnut Township Local Schools, and Worthington City Schools, among others.
