The recent accident involving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) at Kilometer 52 of Jalan Kuala Jeneris-Sungai Gawi-Aring (Bukit Kawah) has left authorities perplexed. According to the Hulu Terengganu district police chief, Supt Sharudin Abd Wahab, the investigation revealed a startling truth: the crash was likely caused by driver negligence.
In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Supt Sharudin shed light on the details of the incident. He explained that no brake marks were found at the scene, suggesting that the SUV did not skid before the fatal plunge into a 61-meter deep ravine.
The SUV, it is believed, entered a stretch of road that had been cut off due to a landslide. This road, usually a safe passage, had been temporarily closed, but the driver's negligence may have led to a tragic outcome. The debris found at the scene indicated that the vehicle was not traveling at high speed, contradicting the typical behavior of a vehicle skidding before a high-speed crash.
Supt Sharudin emphasized the importance of driver attention, stating, 'We believe the accident was caused by negligence, with the driver not paying full attention while driving.' The operation to retrieve the vehicle from the ravine, hindered by heavy rain, took almost four hours, further highlighting the gravity of the situation.
An inspection of the vehicle revealed a missing dashcam, believed to have been dislodged during the incident. This loss of evidence adds to the mystery, as it could have provided crucial footage of the events leading up to the crash.
