Kendrick Lamar delights a young fan with a birthday serenade at the Spilt Milk festival in Canberra
In a moment that captured hearts across the crowd, American rap sensation Kendrick Lamar paused his Canberra performance to sing Happy Birthday for a nine-year-old superfan, Kalina Fowler, sending the audience into a roar of emotion.
Kalina shared with ABC Canberra that she had been shouting, “it’s my birthday,” when Lamar halted the song mid-lyric to acknowledge her, making it the highlight of her first-ever concert.
“I was yelling out, it’s my birthday, it’s my birthday, and then Kendrick saw me yelling so he stopped in the middle of the song,” Kalina recalled. “It was the funnest time ever — my first ever concert.”
Beyond the birthday moment, Lamar surprised Kalina with a signed, personalized cap, which she treasures as a priceless keepsake that she vows to protect: “People want my hat so bad, they tried to give money to me. I said this hat is really priceless so I’m going to keep it for the rest of my life. I won’t let nobody touch it.”
Clips of the moment went viral as fans watched Kalina’s joy unfold on social media.
The moment was especially poignant because Kalina is part of the Yukkumbruk Dancers and had earlier performed at a Welcome to Country ceremony at the festival. She had hoped to meet Lamar backstage but watched his set from the crowd atop her grandfather’s shoulders.
Her grandfather, Robert Palm, noted that Kendrick seemed surprised by the nine-year-old’s confident performance, saying, “She knew every word.” Kalina has been a longtime fan, with her grandmother, Serena Williams, a Ngunnawal elder, among the audience in disbelief as her granddaughter shone in the spotlight.
Weeping with joy, Kalina’s family described the overwhelming emotions of witnessing this moment. Serena Williams expressed how Lamar has become a symbolic figure for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, highlighting his advocacy through his music on issues of Black power and justice.
Lamar headlined Spilt Milk 2025, performing across multiple Australian cities, including Ballarat, Perth, Canberra, and the Gold Coast. The Canberra show drew about 50,000 attendees, with revellers braving wet weather to enjoy the sold-out event.
Kalina believes her distinctive blue braids helped catch her idol’s eye, calling the encounter the “bestest birthday gift ever.” She envisions a future where she shares the hat with her own children, allowing the memento to pass through generations.
As she looks back, Kalina says the memory from the age of nine will stay with her forever, a testament to the power of music to create lasting, transformative moments.
