Maverick Viñales recently admitted that, early in his MotoGP journey, retirement crossed his mind when “nothing worked” for him. Viñales burst onto the grand prix scene with Suzuki in 2015 after just one Moto2 season. His early years on the GSX-RR showed promise with steady top-10 results, followed by podium chances and a first victory at the 2016 British Grand Prix. That breakthrough performance secured him a factory Yamaha seat for 2017, replacing the departing Jorge Lorenzo.
His first year at Yamaha looked like a dream: three wins in the opening five races. Yet as the season wore on, the M1’s struggles with Michelin tires eroded his momentum, and results slipped. The 2018 campaign started poorly, yielding only one podium in the first seven rounds and not another victory until the season’s end in Australia.
During a Duralavita podcast appearance with Jorge Lorenzo, Viñales opened up about contemplating retirement in 2018. He explained that after a year of strong performance, everything suddenly fell apart and motivation waned: “Yes, in 2018. I was coming from a year where everything had been going well, and then, all of a sudden, nothing worked. I had no more motivation.”
Viñales’ relationship with Yamaha deteriorated and, in 2021, he left the two-year deal early amid tension, before reportedly being released after an incident at the Styrian Grand Prix related to attempts to damage his M1’s engine. He rode with Aprilia for the remainder of 2021 and then joined Tech3 KTM for 2022 and beyond.
Looking ahead to 2026, Viñales paints a clear objective: to win the world championship. He envisions a historic feat—adding race wins with four different brands—and emphasizes that reaching his goal hinges on giving 100% in every aspect. He notes that while natural talent and speed have fueled his career, success now requires meticulous attention to detail and disciplined, unwavering work.
Viñales also reflects on personal growth: two years ago, stepping away from family responsibilities would have been impossible, but now his focus, discipline, and readiness to commit fully have changed his perspective—and that readiness is what fuels his current drive for a championship.
