In a bold move, the NSW Parliament has passed a set of controversial reforms, tightening gun laws and protest regulations in the wake of the tragic Bondi Beach attack. This decision, reached after an intense debate that lasted well into the early hours of Christmas Eve, has sparked mixed reactions.
The bill, which received 18 votes in favor and 8 against in the Upper House, aims to enhance public safety by granting police extraordinary powers. While the Liberals sided with the government, the Nationals, Shooters Party, and other crossbench MPs opposed the bill, citing concerns over democratic rights.
However, the Greens, who abstained from voting, proposed a key amendment to tighten access to firearms permits for individuals with suspected terrorist links, a move that gained unanimous support across both houses.
And here's where it gets interesting: the legislation now heads back to the Lower House for final approval, where it will restrict individual gun owners to a maximum of four firearms, with exceptions for primary producers and sports shooters. Magazine capacity will also be reduced, and a stronger vetting process for gun licenses will be implemented, requiring renewals every two years.
But the reforms don't stop there. They also grant police the power to remove face coverings at public assemblies, a move that has raised eyebrows and sparked debates about civil liberties.
