A bold statement has been made by Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas, who accused the Turkish army of disregarding human rights. Gavriel Yerolemou, the Greek Cypriot farmer at the heart of the incident, claimed on Tuesday that over 20 Turkish soldiers and police officers tried to arrest him and his father while they were working on their land. He added that they were attacked with stones and that one of the soldiers grabbed him by the throat.
In a statement later that day, the 'foreign ministry' of the north denied the attack, stating that Greek Cypriot farmers had once again attempted to cultivate land in the TRNC without permission. They accused the farmers of violating a 1988 agreement regarding the use of farmland in the buffer zone and endangering the safety of their police and military personnel by driving tractors towards them when they tried to intervene.
