Cambridge University is on the brink of a transformative era, but can its innovation truly benefit everyone? That's the bold question at the heart of a new initiative led by Roland Sinker CBE, CEO of Cambridge University Hospitals. Appointed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice, Sinker will spearhead a 12-month review to craft a roadmap for inclusive innovation and growth, starting January 1, 2026. The University’s ambition is clear: build on its £30 billion annual contribution to the UK economy by accelerating investment in deep-tech clusters, leveraging health data and AI in life sciences, and fostering sustainable innovation. Yet, this is the part most people miss: how do we ensure these advancements don’t leave anyone behind? Sinker’s role will focus on translating lofty strategies into tangible actions, working closely with Innovate Cambridge, Lord Vallance (Minister for Science, Innovation, Research, and Nuclear), and Peter Freeman (Chair of The Cambridge Growth Company).
Controversially, some might argue that balancing academic excellence with inclusive growth is a tall order. After all, innovation often thrives in elite ecosystems. But Sinker’s decade-long collaboration with the University and his track record as NHS England’s National Director for Life Sciences suggest he’s well-equipped to bridge this gap. His dual role—leading the review while continuing to drive philanthropic efforts for Cambridge’s cancer and children’s hospitals—highlights a commitment to both cutting-edge research and community impact.
The review will also build on the University’s recent civic engagement framework, ensuring local voices shape innovation-led growth.
