The story of a promising Seattle Mariners prospect is poised to capture significant attention this spring training. In 2022, the spotlight shone brightly on Julio Rodríguez, the standout outfielder who made an unforgettable impact at just 21 years old. He dazzled during the Cactus League, ultimately earning a spot as Seattle's starting center fielder. By midseason, he had achieved All-Star status, and by the end of the year, he was named the American League Rookie of the Year.
This spring, another prospect may emerge to follow in Rodríguez’s impressive footsteps: shortstop Colt Emerson, ranked as the No. 9 overall prospect in baseball according to MLB.com. Emerson, only 20 years old, has been making headlines ever since the Mariners selected him with the 22nd pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. His rapid rise through the ranks has captivated fans and analysts alike, and he continued to impress in 2025. At three different levels of minor league play, he showcased his talent: at High-A with the Everett AquaSox, he posted a .281 batting average with an .842 OPS; at Double-A, he maintained a .282 average and a .790 OPS over 34 games with the Arkansas Travelers in the pitching-friendly Texas League; and during a brief stint at Triple-A with the Tacoma Rainiers, he excelled with an impressive .364 average and 1.172 OPS in six games.
While Emerson may not yet have the same level of national recognition as Julio Rodríguez or former Mariners prospect Jarred Kelenic did earlier in the decade, that could soon change. As Jordan Shusterman, a baseball analyst for Yahoo Sports, mentioned during a recent segment on Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy show, "Emerson is set to be one of the most talked-about stories this spring training." He went on to highlight Emerson's exceptional skill set, noting, "He’s one of the best prospects in baseball. While he may not be receiving the same national attention as Julio or Kelenic, I believe that by the midpoint of spring training, he could very well be in the same conversation."
A significant factor driving this speculation is the possibility that Emerson could compete for a spot on the Mariners' roster as a left-handed platoon at third base alongside Ben Williamson. With the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic likely featuring several Mariners players representing their countries, spring training will present Emerson with ample opportunities to demonstrate his abilities on the field.
Shusterman emphasized, "It truly appears that he will arrive at spring training after successfully reaching Triple-A, and at just 20 years of age… they’re likely to give him every chance to earn the position." While such expectations can be daunting for a young player, Emerson seems to possess the right mindset and character to rise to the occasion.
