Imagine waking up on Monday to find your bank's app barely working – frustrating, right? That's exactly what happened to Standard Bank customers recently, who were greeted with a pop-up message indicating limited functionality. But don't worry, the situation seems to be improving! The good news is, according to Standard Bank, their app is mostly back online after experiencing some earlier issues.
While some features were temporarily unavailable, thankfully, internet and cellphone banking remained unaffected. This meant customers could still access essential services, a small comfort during the outage.
The bank acknowledged the disruption, stating, "Our services are currently limited, and only some app features are available." They also mentioned that core banking app services have been restored, with the exception of certain value-added services.
But here's where it gets controversial... Standard Bank has faced its share of system hiccups in recent years. Remember the chief engineer who resigned in mid-2022? And the reports of fraud in July 2024, which led to temporary transaction blocks in Brazil? These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges the bank has faced.
In November of the same year, a concerning security breach occurred when an employee copied client data to an unprotected personal device, triggering disciplinary action.
According to Downdetector, the first reports of problems surfaced around 08:00, with the peak of issues occurring around 14:00. Even by 16:30, some errors were still being reported, though to a lesser extent.
Standard Bank has apologized for the inconvenience and encouraged customers to use internet and cellphone banking for value-added services like purchasing prepaid electricity, airtime, or data.
