The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has once again escalated, with devastating drone attacks unfolding during the Christmas holiday—an act that underscores the chilling reality of this war. But here's where it gets controversial: even during a time typically reserved for peace and reflection, hostilities did not pause, highlighting the relentless nature of military escalation in this region.
From Wednesday night through Thursday morning, both nations engaged in a fierce exchange of long-range drone strikes. According to Ukraine’s Kyiv air force, Russia launched an astonishing 131 drones into Ukrainian territory during the night. Out of these, Ukrainian defenses managed to shoot down or neutralize 106, showcasing both the scale of the attack and the resilience of Ukraine’s air defenses. Despite these efforts, 22 drones managed to reach their targets, causing damage at 15 different locations across the country.
By Thursday morning, Ukrainian officials and military sources issued warnings that Russian drones remained airborne, indicating that the threat was still very much present. In the southern port city of Odesa, Governor Oleh Kiper reported that Russian forces targeted port facilities and industrial infrastructure, causing destruction to industrial sites and tragically resulting in at least one confirmed death. Two additional individuals sustained injuries in this attack.
Further to the northeast, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES) disclosed that over the past 24 hours, Russian strikes have resulted in at least one death and 14 injuries across Kharkiv, a critical region in eastern Ukraine. The SES also confirmed that a Russian drone struck a high-rise residential building in Chernihiv and that several energy infrastructure sites in the city came under attack, threatening Ukraine’s energy stability.
Ukraine’s energy authority, Ukrenergo, warned via Telegram that these strikes have caused widespread power outages across multiple regions, including Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa. In response, authorities announced that energy consumption restrictions will be enforced throughout Thursday to prevent further strain on the grid.
Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba expressed frustration on Telegram, noting, “Even during the Christmas holidays, Russia continues to target Ukrainian logistics, ports, and essential infrastructure,” emphasizing the ongoing threat despite the holiday season.
In Russia, the situation remains tense as well. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that their forces intercepted at least 141 Ukrainian drones overnight—the highest number of drone hits they have claimed to have shot down during a single 24-hour period in the conflict, including nine over Moscow itself. Moscow’s Mayor Sergey Sobyanin updated the public via Telegram, informing that emergency services were actively working at the sites where debris had fallen.
Border regions in Russia were also affected. In Bryansk, which borders Ukraine, Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz announced that one person was hospitalized after suffering injuries from shrapnel caused by a drone attack, which also destroyed an apartment building. In southern Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, officials reported that the port city of Temryuk was targeted, resulting in a fire after two tanks storing petroleum products were set ablaze.
Additionally, Rosaviatsiya, Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, imposed temporary flight restrictions at airports in Krasnodar and Yaroslavl amid ongoing military activities. This move aimed to ensure security during the heightened tensions.
Wednesday night’s barrage of Russian attacks followed earlier Ukrainian drone operations into Russia, launched on Tuesday night and throughout Wednesday. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, their forces managed to shoot down at least 387 Ukrainian drones over this period—marking the largest number of drone interceptions in a single day since the conflict began—including more than a dozen over Moscow itself.
