Williams F1 2026 Car Hits the Track! Silverstone Shakedown, FW48 Debut, and Bahrain Prep (2026)

The 2026 Williams Formula 1 car has finally made its long-awaited debut on the track, completing a shakedown at Silverstone. This milestone comes just a week after the British team opted out of the shakedown in Barcelona, which has stirred quite a bit of discussion among fans and analysts alike.

Last week, Formula 1 kicked off its first collective test session of the 2026 season, featuring a five-day private run at the iconic Catalan circuit. This season is particularly significant as it brings about a comprehensive overhaul of technical regulations that affect both the chassis design and the power unit specifications. To assist teams in acclimating to these new regulations, F1 introduced an additional test session; however, Williams announced that it would be skipping the Barcelona shakedown, citing "delays in the FW48 program."

Team Principal James Vowles explained that the delays were due to the increased demands placed on their systems, noting that "the amount of load going through our system is about three times what it used to be." Instead of participating in the Barcelona event, Williams opted to conduct a Virtual Track Test (VTT). This innovative approach resembles a simulator but utilizes most of the actual car components mounted on a rig to simulate track conditions.

At the livery launch event on Tuesday, Vowles expressed optimism about the VTT, stating it was "successful" and that they achieved the desired mileage, paving the way for Wednesday's shakedown at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix.

During this shakedown, both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz took to the track, although they did not use the official 2026 livery, which features a sleek dark blue and black design accented with lighter shades of blue and white on the sidepods. Instead, the car sported a special testing color scheme in preparation for its next outing in Bahrain on February 10, where another promotional filming day is scheduled.

Vowles reflected on the significance of the day, saying, "This was a milestone day for us, and it's always a proud moment to see a new car on track for the first time. The team has worked incredibly hard under pressure to deliver a car ready for this promotional filming day at Silverstone. We gained valuable insights into our package, preparing us for Bahrain next week. Both Carlos and Alex provided positive feedback that will help us refine minor issues before our next test. This is just the beginning, and we have much more work ahead of us."

Following the filming day in Bahrain, Williams will participate in the first official three-day pre-season test from February 11 to 13, followed by a second test at the same circuit from February 18 to 20, all leading up to the season opener in Melbourne set for March 6-8, 2026.

Albon shared his thoughts post-shakedown, stating, "That’s shakedown done. We have a few data points to analyze and areas to improve upon, but overall it was a fairly smooth day. We experienced decent weather for Silverstone at this time of year, and I’m thrilled to finally be behind the wheel of the FW48. Our focus is now entirely on Bahrain as we delve into the data and prepare for the season kickoff."

Sainz echoed similar sentiments, saying, "We just had our first laps in the FW48. It’s always an exciting and special day for drivers, mechanics, and the entire team, and it’s been a tremendous effort from everyone to get the car on the track today. Given the typical winter conditions at Silverstone, we concentrated on completing our initial laps and following our shakedown plan. We are eager to head to Bahrain in a few days to engage in more thorough running plans, and I am looking forward to that!"

Entering the 2026 season, Williams aims to build on its fifth-place finish in the 2025 championship, marking its best performance since 2017, which included two podium finishes from Sainz in Baku and Qatar.
