Winter Storm Alert: DC Area Braces for Snowfall and Bitter Cold (2026)

Get ready for a winter wonderland, DC! A snowy weekend is on its way, and it's going to be a chilly one.

The forecast predicts a few inches of snowfall across the DC region this weekend, just as the temperatures take a nosedive. By Sunday morning, most areas are expected to receive 1 to 3 inches of snow, with lighter snowfall anticipated south and west of the District.

But here's where it gets tricky: the wintry weather, combined with freezing temperatures, could create icy road conditions. So, it's important to stay alert and prepared.

Saturday will start on a milder note, with dry conditions in the morning. However, as the day progresses, a wintry mix is expected to move in during the evening. Mark Peña, our First Alert Meteorologist, predicts a mix of snow, rain, and ice as temperatures remain above freezing around sunset.

As the night deepens, a blast of cold air will arrive, transforming the weather into a full-blown snowfall. The chance of snow increases after 10 p.m. on Saturday, with temperatures plummeting into the 20s, according to Peña.

The snowfall is expected to wrap up around 7 a.m. on Sunday, but any snow that sticks around will be accompanied by even colder temperatures, dropping from the 30s into the 20s.

And this is the part most people miss: no matter how much snow you get, everyone will be feeling the chill. Temperatures will only warm up to near freezing by Sunday afternoon, so bundle up!

DC is already gearing up for the incoming snowfall. Starting Friday night, crews will begin brining operations on elevated surfaces, and snow plows will start treating major roads on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Another weather concern is the bitter wind chills on Sunday and Monday. Temperatures will be subfreezing, with gusty winds bringing wind chills down to the teens and single digits. Northwest winds are expected to blow at 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph on Sunday.

So, if you're planning to attend the Commanders game on Sunday, make sure you dress warmly!

This upcoming round of wintry weather follows the first snow of the season last week, which left about 1 to 3 inches of snow across the DC area. The snow stuck to the roads for a few days before melting.

Here's a quick breakdown of the forecast:

Friday Night: Increasing clouds, with lows ranging from 25 to 33 degrees Fahrenheit. Winds will be from the south at 5 mph.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a late evening wintry mix. Highs will be in the 45 to 51 degree range, and winds will be from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday: WINTER ALERT! Early morning snow with very cold and blustery conditions. Temperatures will fall from the 30s into the 20s, and winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph.

Monday: COLD ALERT! Partly sunny with highs of 28 to 34 degrees. Winds will continue from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph.

Stay tuned for more updates, and remember to keep an eye on the weather conditions throughout the weekend.
